Curriculum

We aim for learning to be memorable, meaningful and, irresistible for the children. We have a rich, broad and balanced curriculum based on the needs of the pupils and well-founded research evidence of what works well. The curriculum is based on the Lighthouse Schools Partnership Curriculum and has been further enriched to reflect the unique, rural and historic nature of the schools and the local environment. We are ambitious for all our children and no ceiling is placed on any child's academic potential.

Early Years Foundation Stage

As children start school our aim is to provide a setting where they will soon feel confident, valued, secure and happy. Reception children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum (0-5 years) which is based around three prime areas of learning: communication and language; physical development; personal, social and emotional development, and four specific areas of learning which include literacy; mathematics; understanding the world; and expressive arts and design. These areas of learning link directly into the primary curriculum and provide an excellent foundation and smooth transition into Year One.

Phonics and Reading

Reading and phonics are prioritised at our schools. All children in Reception and Key Stage One receive daily phonics teaching.  We use the Read Write Inc reading and writing scheme. If children entering Key Stage Two still need support with their phonics, we put carefully targeted 'catch-up' teaching in place.

Reading for pleasure is given high status to ensure that children enjoy the magic of stories, poetry and information books. We ensure that children hear adults read loud every day, and we promote a culture that values high-quality books.

Reading skills are further developed through whole class reading sessions in KS2 with a clear focus on teaching the skills of 'Explanation', 'Retrieval', 'Inference' and 'Choice'. We encourage children to read regularly in school and at home - helping to develop their confidence, comprehension skills and fluency further.

Religious Education - We follow the Somerset Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education entitled, ‘Awareness, Mystery and Value’ and 'Understanding Christianity'.  This area of learning develops children’s knowledge and understanding of the nature of religion and belief.   Although Christianity has a central place in the RE curriculum we also study other principal religions, religious traditions and world views, in the context of a diverse society.

The school celebrates daily collective worship.  We also hold our Harvest Festival, Christmas Service, Easter Service and Leavers' Service in our village church each year.  The local clergy also take regular school worships.
